Rutland County Council Joins National Parking Platform to Expand Driver Choice
Rutland County Council has officially joined the National Parking Platform (NPP), effective 27 August 2026. This government-backed initiative, supported by the Department for Transport, gives motorists greater flexibility and choice when paying to park in council-run car parks.
Instead of being locked into a single provider, drivers can now use their preferred participating parking app from a range of approved options.
The standard cost of parking remains set by Rutland County Council, regardless of which payment method you choose.
The initiative brings a more streamlined, digital-first approach to local parking, aligning with over 1,300 locations across 22 participating local authorities nationwide.
While the parking tariffs remain identical across providers, motorists should be aware of a few operational details:
App providers may apply a small administration or convenience fee, which varies depending on the provider.
Additional services such as automated text message reminders before a parking session expires may also incur minor extra charges.
Motorists will no longer be able to use PayPoint at participating shops for council parking. However, the Council has noted it will monitor demand and investigate similar alternative options moving forward.
Councillor Oliver Hemsley, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport at Rutland County Council, highlighted the customer-focused goals of the move:
"Joining the National Parking Platform gives our residents and visitors greater choice when paying for parking, while helping us provide a more modern and convenient service. By allowing drivers to use a range of approved payment providers, we hope to make paying for parking simpler and more flexible for everyone using our car parks."
Echoing this enthusiasm, David Sinclair, Executive Director at the National Parking Platform, added:
"We're thrilled to welcome Rutland County Council to the National Parking Platform. Rutland's decision demonstrates that the benefits of the NPP are just as valuable for smaller authorities as they are for larger cities."
