It is with great sadness and deepest regret that we announce that Council Leader Roger Begy OBE has died following his short battle with cancer.
Councillor Begy passed away at Leicester Royal Infirmary on the morning of Monday 1st February 2016. He was 72.
His family would like to thank well-wishers for their messages of support throughout recent weeks and said: “Roger was not only an ambassador for Rutland but he was also a loving, funny, supportive father, husband and grandfather. Food and wine were his passion and his family remember him best for the often five-hour long lunches where port, wine and food were enjoyed whilst we debated and laughed about everyday things. We are proud of how he fought the corner of those who needed help and support with kindness and when appropriate humour. The love, condolences and messages we have received have been over whelming.”
Councillor Begy’s family now ask for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time. A further statement will be issued confirming funeral arrangements and details of a Memorial Service in due course.
The flags outside Rutland County Council’s offices are being flown at half-mast.

The thoughts of everyone at Rutland County Council are with his family and loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”

Oakham Town Councils flag flying at half mast is a normally reserved for former
Mayors and Town Councillors who die in office. This is the first time it has been
raised in honour of a serving Rutland County Councillor and Leader.

Following the sad news of the passing away of Councillor Roger Begy,
the Chairman of the Council, Cllr Alf Dewis has said:
"It is with deep regret that we receive the news of Roger Begy's passing. Roger was a good friend of Oakham Town Council and will be a tremendous loss to local government in Rutland and the East Midlands. All our thoughts are with Roger's family at this sad time."

Roger Begy OBE Conservative Leader Of Rutland County Council Has Died
Tributes have been paid to Rutland County Council leader Roger Begy who passed away this morning after a short illness.
Roger aged 72, had been suffering from cancer which was diagnosed before Christmas.
He died at the Leicester Royal Infirmary this morning.
My thoughts are for Councillor Begy's family especially Nick, Michelle and their son Will and Rogers wife, I know Michelle has been very strong since before Christmas in supporting her boys through this difficult time.
Councillor Begy, an Oxford graduate, represented the Greetham Ward and has led the council since 2003.
He was also managing director at Alcan Polyfoil and held senior board positions at Green Giant and Directorship of British Sugar until semi-retiring.
