Spring Blooms in Oakham: Lord Lieutenant and Mayor Judge Vibrant Window Displays

Oakham town centre burst into colour and creativity this past Saturday as local businesses participated in the Spring Shopping event, showcasing their most imaginative window displays. The task of judging these floral and seasonal spectacles fell to Rutland's Lord Lieutenant, Dr. Sarah Furness, and Oakham's Mayor, Councillor Paul Ainsley, who both agreed the competition was fierce and the effort put in by entrants was truly commendable.
The Spring Shopping event, saw many local shops pulling out all the stops to create eye-catching displays that celebrated the arrival of spring. From blossoming flowers to pastel hues and charming seasonal themes, the town's windows became a vibrant gallery, drawing in shoppers despite the chilly but sunny weather.
Lord Lieutenant Dr. Sarah Furness commented on the high standard of entries, stating that judging was a "difficult task." She noted that it was evident "many of the entrants had worked considerably hard to create the perfect spring window." This sentiment was echoed by Oakham's Mayor, Councillor Paul Ainsley, who concurred that finding a winner and runner-up was a "difficult one."
Demonstrating the close nature of the competition, both judges undertook a meticulous process, creating a shortlist before revisiting each of the chosen shop windows. After careful consideration and deliberation, the top honours were finally announced.
Taking the coveted first place was Home Instead, located in the Maltings of Mill Street. Their display clearly captured the essence of spring, impressing the judges with its creativity and attention to detail.
Securing the second-place spot was Hungry Birds Coffee shop on Burley Road. Their window offered a delightful and inviting spring scene, which resonated with both judges.
Adding a touch of humour to the proceedings, Dr. Furness and Councillor Ainsley decided to award a special commendation for wit to Cromwells Menswear on Oakham High Street. Their display, while embracing the spring theme, also incorporated a clever and amusing element that caught the judges' eyes.
Reflecting on the success of the event, Mayor Councillor Paul Ainsley expressed his delight. He was "very pleased with the Spring Shopping event" and particularly happy to see "so many people out in town on a very cold but sunny day." The vibrant window displays undoubtedly contributed to the positive atmosphere, encouraging residents and visitors alike to embrace the spring spirit and support local businesses.
