Tesco, Horsemeat, What we found, And what we're doing

What we found. And what we're doing.

Two weeks ago, we apologised to you, our customers, because three of our frozen beef burger products were found to contain horsemeat.

We promised to find out exactly what happened and then come back and tell you.

Here’s what we now know.

Our frozen burger supplier used meat in our products that did not come from the list of approved suppliers we had given them. Nor was the meat from the UK or Ireland, despite our strict instruction that they only use beef from those two countries.

This supplier will no longer supply any products to any of our stores.

But we, Tesco, are responsible for the food that we sell.

We have an expert technical team in place, with stringent tests, checks and controls, to look after the quality of our food. In this case, it wasn’t enough.

So we’re taking action. We will now introduce a comprehensive system of DNA testing across our meat products.

These checks will set a new standard for all supermarkets.

We want you to know that we will do whatever it takes to ensure the quality of our products. And that when something is not on the label, it’s not in the food.
