EYS Training, The Market Tavern Pub, Melton Mowbray, Post Work Programme Day One
The course finally started today. Upstairs in a pub at the Cattle Market
Not as glamorous as it sounds.
I arrived in good time for a 9.30 start.
The first 30 minutes was spent listening to some peoples dissatisfaction with Melton Mowbray
job centre.
Some people don't speak at the moment.
I have never really had any serious problem with the staff at Melton Job Centre in the early
days, I had a slight problem with a pompous camp old fart, but that issue was resolved fairly
quickly.
The tutor seemed to agree with others, saying it was one of the worse they had to deal with. This was
supported by the course manager who strolled in at around 10.00.
It was unclear if they had come to see us or just collect two boxed Fujitsu notebooks, as they departed
forgetting their car keys at around 10.30 not before she sent away a poor man who had turned up, his name was not on the list. The manager said it was common for the job centre to send along just anyone.
so if your names not on the EYS list your not getting in!
There are no computers provided at this location for students/job seekers.
We use good old fashioned pen and paper and the tutor uses a pen on a tiny
wipe board.
We learnt the course has a title.
certificate in work skills
We were then asked to complete some more forms and read a 40 page document, made up
of the Student Journey, Confidentiality Policy, Equality and Diversity Policy, Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Complaints procedure, Assessment and Appeals Process.
We all signed a Behaviour Contract.
We all must have been on our best behaviour as we were sent home early today.
We signed a few more times, for various reasons.
By lunch time I thought it would be appropriate to mention, I had not had any liquid refreshment
since 7.30 am. The nice tutor promised to sort it for the afternoon and she did, Bottled water and Robinson's
Squashes were offered and an extra treat awaited us Co-op value choc chip cookies. Not having money to eat out they made a welcome after lunch snack.
Looking through my folder it appears we have all earned the first of many certificates, the first a very grey one, to acknowledge successful completion of the mornings induction.
The Course we are expected to complete by the 28th August 2013 is made up of 9 units, I don't think it would be unfair to say many of the units may or should have been covered by the two year work programme that has just ended, or elsewhere. I met people who have been out of work for longer periods than me, so it's no surprise some of those feel a little numb, one has been out of work for 14 years.
Unit 3 Managing your own money
Unit 5 Searching for a Job
Unit 6 Applying for a Job
Unit 7 Preparing for an interview
Unit 8 Interview Skills
Unit 9 Self Management Skills
Unit 15 Communicating Solutions to others
Unit 17 Working in a team
Unit 22 Managing your health at work
We were asked to chose a unit to start on, I felt the only one that seemed of any interest
to me was unit 15 so I mentioned this and we ended up starting that unit, I am not sure if we completed it, I am sure we will find out tomorrow.
It was not that interesting.
