Rutland Memorial Hospital, Oakham, The NHS hang onto bequests Why?

Visitors and resident have often complained about the state of Oakham hospitals garden and the response
from the NHS is we don't have the money.

6 years ago a resident bequested £100,000 for the garden and not a penny has been spent.

A request for information was made in 2012 The NHS responded

Charitable Trust and Donations

Request

Regarding charitable donations and bequests to Rutland Memorial Hospital please advise the following

1. Specifically how much of the £100,000 charitable bequest made in the will of Mr Teddy Toon,
undertaker of Uppingham made 3-4 years ago has been spent and upon what?

2. What other charitable donations or bequests have been made to the Rutland Memorial Hospital in
the past 15 years and what monies have been spent and upon what?

Our Response

The Edward J Toon Rutland Patients Fund 68030 was started in November 2008.
No purchases have yet been made against this fund, however, there is currently a planning group in the process of designing a patient garden at Rutland Hospital to spend the majority of this legacy (this is in
line with the conditions placed upon the donation).

The early estimate for the garden is approximately £90,000; subject to tenders being received.
The fee element for the designer, contract manager and Quantity Surveyor will be paid from the capital programme by the Trust; hence the entire charity funding will go exclusively to the garden itself.
