What a day of double celebrations in Cutts Close, Oakham! Amidst the vibrant Party in the Park festivities, honoring VE Day, VJ Day, and Armed Forces Day, two remarkable women, Sophie and Gwyn Andrews, marked their birthdays with joy and fanfare.

Many people enjoyed the various commemorations, but it was extra special for Sophie. She was treated to a personal serenade and shared a delightful dance with the singer, creating a memorable moment for everyone present.

Adding to the birthday cheer, Rob Persani from Rutland and Stamford Sound took to the bandstand to extend warm wishes to Gwyn Andrews. Gwyn, a truly fabulous lady, is a well-known and respected figure in the community as the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal coordinator for Rutland.

As Europe celebrated the surrender of German forces on VE Day, thousands of British, Commonwealth and Allied Armed Forces personnel were still involved in bitter fighting in the Far East. Victory over Japan Day on 15 August marks the surrender of Japan forces, which in effect ended the Second World War.

Victory over Japan Day on 15 August marks the surrender of Japan forces, which in effect ended the Second World War. For months after VE Day on 8 May 1945 war continued to wage in the Asia-Pacific region and only came to an end after two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

75 years on we are remembering the contribution of all British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces, without whom victory and the freedoms and way of life we enjoy today would have not been possible.
