Rutland's Community Fridges: Fighting Food Waste and Building Community, Volunteers Required

Rutland's Community Fridges: Fighting Food Waste and Building Community, Volunteers Required

Rutland is taking a stand against food waste with the establishment of Community Fridges, a fantastic initiative that's not only helping the environment but also strengthening community bonds. These fridges, located in Oakham, provide a space for surplus food from local supermarkets to be shared, preventing it from ending up in landfills.

The Community Fridge concept is simple yet powerful: perfectly good food that would otherwise be discarded is collected and made available to anyone who needs it. This reduces food waste, supports those facing food insecurity, and fosters a spirit of sharing within the community. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.

The success of Rutland’s Community Fridges relies heavily on the generosity of local supermarkets and, crucially, the dedication of volunteers. And now, there’s a call for more helping hands!

Volunteers are needed to join the Tuesday and Thursday pick-up teams. These vital roles involve collecting surplus food from local supermarkets and transporting it to the Community Fridge in Oakham. It’s a rewarding way to contribute to a sustainable and supportive community.

If you have some time to spare and are passionate about preventing food waste, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. Even a few hours a week can make a significant difference. Whether you’re available during the day or in the evenings, the Community Fridge team would love to hear from you.

Interested in joining the fight against food waste? Simply email info@rootandbranchout.co.uk, letting them know which days/evenings you’re available to volunteer. By joining the rota, you’ll become part of a dedicated team working to save tonnes of ‘good food’ from landfill and support your local community. Together, Rutland can make a real impact.
