We were given a interesting presentation by Leslie Owen-Jones from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The money they receive comes from 5p from the sale of each Lottery Ticket. Sadly as money gets tighter for people they buy more tickets and in turn this is good for the Heritage Fund and other lottery good causes.
At one point we split into groups to discuss possible projects in our own areas.
The group I was part of was very interesting. It was lead by Lynn Aisbett Chief Executive of Melton Borough Council. Not as I expected a very pleasant friendly charming woman, nothing like previous po faced rude Chief Executives I have met in the past.
In our group we had the Conservation Officer from Rutland County Council Mr Trubshaw, we both came up with the same idea at one point.
Cllr Maureen Jalili, came up with a very interesting suggestion relating some very interesting finds at Stamford Town Council. Old parish records and other documents whilst restoration work is being currently carried out on the Town Hall. She said they have found a three meter petition signed by Lord Burghley's tenants after he attempted to kick them out of there rented homes for not voting for him. Parliament ruled he was breaking the law and the tenants did not lose their homes. Something tells me politics through the ages hs not change that much!
Peter Ellement of the Harborough Improvement Team, Cllr Brenda Johnson from Bourne Town Council were also in our group.
Cynthia Thomas of Broughton Astley Heritage Society had a some very interesting suggestions and was very knowledgeable and passionate about her subject. He said she went to University late in life and obtained her history BA at the age of 52. She as you would expect from such a dedicated person plugged the Society and a few events.
