Tesco launches Scan and Shop at its Superstore in Oakham Rutland, but staff choice could have been better.
Tesco has launched its Scan and Shop service at its Superstore in Oakham Rutland, allowing customers to scan their items as they shop and pay for them at a self-checkout kiosk without having to unload their trolleys or bags.
The service is designed to be faster and more convenient for customers, but some shoppers have expressed concern about the member of staff chosen to welcome customers to the Scan and Shop area.
The staff member in question has been accused of discriminating against certain customers, choosing not to welcome them to the Scan and Shop area and only distributing free Quality Street to those she liked.
One customer, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I was really excited to try out the Scan and Shop service, but when I entered the shop I was greeted by a staff member who was very rude and dismissive. They made it clear that I was not welcome and I felt very humiliated."
Another customer said: "I have seen the same staff member be rude to other customers. I think it's appalling that Tesco would choose someone like them to welcome customers to a new service."
Tesco has said that it is aware of the allegations and is investigating the matter. A spokesperson said: "We take all allegations like this very seriously. We are investigating the matter and will take appropriate action. We expect all our customers to be treated with respect. One of our core values is to treat people as you would like to be treated"
It is hoped that Tesco will take steps to ensure that all customers are welcome in their stores, regardless who they are, or any other factor.
It is public knowledge, the Mayor of Oakham recently encountered a very rude member of staff and that is currently under investigation.
