By Susan Shaw

Kindly submit all event details to susanshaw@post.com.

Get ready to swap your screen for the scenery. This May Bank Holiday, the award-winning outdoor adventure attraction Rumble Live Action Gaming is officially bringing "the Force" back to the woods.

For one day only, Rumble’s woodland arenas will transform into an immersive battleground inspired by a galaxy far, far away. Their annual Star Wars-themed laser tag days have become a cult favorite, and this year promises to be the most atmospheric yet.

Forget sitting in a dark cinema; this is your chance to live the saga. Rumble is blending high-tech laser tag with live-action roleplay, creating a "real-life gaming" experience that feels more like a movie set than a standard playground.

Players won’t just be dodging infrared beams they’ll be navigating the woods alongside some of the franchise’s most legendary figures. Expect to see:

Catch a glimpse of Obi-Wan Kenobi or team up with Rey to lead the charge.

Watch your back for the imposing presence of Kylo Ren and squads of Stormtroopers patrolling the forest floor.

The event is designed to be inclusive for fans of all stripes. Whether you’re a seasoned "Mando" fan or a young Padawan just starting your journey, the woods are open to:

Families and friends looking for a unique Bank Holiday outing.

Fans of all ages (specifically 6+).

Event Details at a Glance

Feature Details

Event Star Wars Themed Laser Tag

Date May Bank Holiday (One Day Only)

Location Both Rumble Live Action Gaming venues

Age Limit 6 years old and up

Highlights Live characters, immersive missions, outdoor woodland setting

Rumble has built a reputation for its "Action Gaming" style, which moves away from the neon-lit, plastic-vested laser tag of the 90s and toward a more tactical, mission-based experience. By adding the Star Wars layer, they provide a rare opportunity for fans to physically step into the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order.

"It’s about more than just the score; it’s about the atmosphere. Seeing a Stormtrooper emerge from the trees while you’re holding a ridge is something you don’t forget quickly."

Spaces for these themed days are notoriously limited and tend to sell out faster than a jump to lightspeed. If you’re looking to make this May Bank Holiday legendary, it’s time to pick up your blaster and head to the woods.

Oakham Town Council Moves Forward with Victoria Hall Plans and 20mph Speed Limit Support 8th April 2026 Meeting Video

by The Local Democracy Reporter, ldreporter@post.com

Oakham Town Council met on Wednesday, 8th April 2026, for a productive session that saw significant progress on the future of Victoria Hall and a formal commitment to local road safetyChaired by Cllr C Nix, the meeting covered a range of civic matters from infrastructure repairs to ambitious community bids.

The highlight of the evening was a detailed presentation regarding the refurbishment and governance of Victoria Hall. The Council agreed on a multi-stage approach to revitalise the historic building:

Stage 1 focuses on obtaining trustee ownership for the Council and registering deeds with the Land RegistryThe Council authorised £9,850 for essential legal work by Anthony Collins Solicitors to ensure a robust framework is in place.

Stage 2 will involve securing planning and building consents to begin physical works.

A major consultation is planned, including the distribution of 5,000 flyers and a survey to gauge public support for the projectNotably, Cllr Brookes volunteered to personally deliver these leaflets to Oakham residents.

The Council approved £24,000 for contract management and design fees to oversee the early stages of the project.

While debates occurred regarding the business plan and potential "twin-hatted" legal conflicts, the majority of Councillors voted to proceed with these essential first steps to protect the building's future.

In a move toward enhanced pedestrian safety, the Council formally resolved to support the principle of 20mph speed limits on appropriate streets within Oakham. The motion passed with the backing of Cllr R Payne (RCC), who noted that such a scheme would likely find broad support at the county levelThe Chair and Clerk will now formally write to Rutland County Council to offer a partnership in implementing these changes.

The meeting also touched on several immediate town matters:

The Clerk reported that a large tree at Centenary Field which fell during high winds was promptly felled and cleared to ensure public safety.

Cllr Clark confirmed that a bid has been submitted for Oakham to be recognised as a UK Town of Culture, following positive public feedback gathered at local market stalls.

The police have officially closed the case regarding unauthorized access to Council premises.

The Council is preparing for a busy May, with the Annual Town Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, 12th May, followed by the Annual Town Council Meeting on Wednesday, 13th May

A New Era for Authentic Turkish Flavour Köz Oakham Moves to Larger Premises, 2 High Street, Oakham, LE15 6AL

A New Era for Authentic Turkish Flavour Köz Oakham Moves to Larger Premises

Fans of authentic charcoal-grilled meats and vibrant Mediterranean mezze have a new reason to celebrate. Köz Authentic Turkish Charcoal Grill, which has rapidly become a cornerstone of Oakham’s independent dining scene, has officially transitioned into larger premises to keep up with its booming popularity.

Since its initial opening in late 2023, Köz has earned a reputation for bringing the true taste of the ocakbaşı (Turkish fireside) to Rutland. The move marks a significant milestone for the local business, allowing for an expanded dining area, a more refined bar experience, and the capacity to host more of the local foodies who have made it a "must-visit" destination.

What sets Köz apart in the heart of Oakham is its dedication to traditional methods. The center of the kitchen remains the authentic charcoal grill, where real lumpwood charcoal is used to infuse dishes with a distinct, smoky depth that gas grills simply cannot replicate.

The expanded menu continues to feature the favorites that built their following:

Signature Shish & Adana, hand-minced lamb and marinated chicken breast skewers, grilled to perfection.

Cold & Hot Mezze, from creamy Hummus and Saksuka to crispy Sigara Boregi and seared Sujuk.

The Shared Experience, large "Mixed Meze" platters designed for the communal style of dining that is central to Turkish culture.

The new premises offer more than just extra seating. The interior design blends contemporary "Bar & Grill" aesthetics with warm, traditional accents, creating a space that works just as well for a casual midweek lunch as it does for a celebratory Friday night dinner.

With the move, the eatery has also enhanced its bar offering, providing a curated selection of wines and spirits that pair perfectly with the bold flavors of the Mediterranean.

Whether you are a long-time regular or a newcomer to the scents of the Turkish grill, the new-look Köz is ready to welcome you.

The Heartland Returns Why the 2026 Rutland County Show is Unmissable

The Heartland Returns Why the 2026 Rutland County Show is Unmissable

by Martin Brookes, orneditor@post.com

There is a specific kind of magic that settles over the Rutland Showground come late May. It’s in the low lowing of the prize cattle, the scent of fresh-cut grass, and that unmistakable buzz of a community coming together to celebrate its roots. As a local who has spent years capturing the spirit of our county through a lens, I can tell you the Rutland County Show isn't just an event; it’s the heartbeat of Rutland.

This year, on Sunday, 31st May 2026, the 191st edition of the show returns to Oakham, promising a day that bridges our rich agricultural heritage with the vibrant, modern energy of Rutland life.

The Main Ring remains the undisputed star of the show. Whether you’re there for the high-octane thrills of the stunt teams or the rhythmic elegance of the scurry driving, there’s a timelessness to it all. For those who prefer the "heavy lifters," the Shire horses are always a personal highlight majestic reminders of the power that once worked these fields.

From the finest sheep and cattle to British Showjumping, the competitive spirit is as fierce as ever.

The food hall is a dangerous place for the hungry, an array of artisan producers that make "shopping local" an absolute treat.

With animal encounters, traditional funfairs, and rural craft demonstrations, it’s the ultimate day out for the kids and the young at heart.

One of the most heartening sights every year is the “For Rutland” Grand Bottle Tombola. It’s a local institution that raises vital funds for Citizens Advice Rutland, supporting those living with long-term health conditions. It’s a reminder that while we’re here to have fun, we’re also here for each other.

The gates open at 9:00 AM, and I highly recommend getting there early to beat the rush.

Parking: Free on-site parking is available, including dedicated disabled bays.

Shuttle Bus: If you’re coming from Oakham or Uppingham, keep an eye out for the free shuttle service it’s the stress-free way to travel.

Dogs: Well-behaved four-legged friends are welcome on non-retractable leads.

As always, the early bird catches the worm and the discount.

While gate prices are £20 for adults and £5 for children, you can save significantly by booking online in advance.
