Assault in Calico Bar, Mill Street Oakham

Assault in Calico Bar, Oakham

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward following an assault at an Oakham bar in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The incident started in Calico’s Bar in Mill Street at about 1am on Sunday April 15, when one man assaulted another.

A number of other people then became involved and the incident spilled out into the car park.
As a result of the incident one man received an injury to his eye and was treated at the scene by the ambulance service. He later attended hospital for further treatment.
One man, aged 45-years-old, was arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Sergeant Matt Ditcher, one of the officers investigating the incident, said: “Although we have one person arrested we are still appealing for anyone with information about the incident, in particular what happened in the car park, to call us so we can locate the others involved.
“The owners of the bar did the right thing by notifying us and following the incident they closed the bar. Since then we have been working closely with the premises license holders to try and prevent incidents like this happening again.

“We have agreed a plan of action with the owners which aims to target excessive drinking, assaults and incidents of disorder. The plan consists of various points including increased security visibility, a reduction in the number of people that are served alcohol when already intoxicated and also increased contact with police regarding incidents similar to the one on Sunday.

“Because this isn’t the first time an incident like this has happened in the bar we will continue to work with the owners and will monitor their progress and hold them to account to ensure the safety of visitors to the bar.
“If you were at the bar that night and think you might be able to help us with our enquiries I would urge you to call us.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Sgt 2898 Matt Ditcher by dialing 101.  Follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer, and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number 2898.  Alternatively, you may contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
