Cllr Lockett Says Oakham & Uppingham CCTV Monitoring at Melton Mowbray is very poor

Cllr Lockett Says Oakham & Uppingham CCTV Monitoring at Melton Mowbray is very poor

Rutland County Council, Tesco have spent a fortune on state of the art CCTV.

Oakham Town Council contributes towards the monitoring costs. This allows them to appoint a representative on the CCTV committee.

This has in the past be the responsibility of Cllr Charles Haworth who has a very comfortable relationship with Leicestershire Constabulary and Rutland County Council, He never reported any problem or issues.
Clearly not wanting to upset either organisations.

Cllr Lockett has shown a lot of interest since he took on the role, This evening he reported on his visit to the control centre based in Melton Mowbray. He described the visit as very disappointing.

He found there is one person employed to monitor the screens, he lives in Melton and all the volunteers are Melton none of them have any knowledge or interest in Oakham or Uppingham.

Although cameras may be recording in Oakham and Uppingham they are only viewed if the police request assistance. Cllr  Lockett described this by saying Melton Mowbray  monitoring was proactive and Rutland was only  reactive.

The set up consists of a central bank of monitors all set to view Melton of to the sides are a few set to view Oakham and Uppingham. He said it was not easy for the controllers to even see them.

He also found that much of the recording would not be of any value to a court.

He suggested as Oakham Town Council made a large financial contribution, the council should approach
Rutland County Council and suggest they consider setting up a monitoring station in Rutland.

I personal have found the cameras ineffective, when the police have told me they were pointing the wrong way or up in the sky.

The town council has also found the cameras have been ineffective in catching vandals attacking the public toilets.

Oakham in Blooms lamp post baskets were pulled down in front of the CCTV camera in South Street paid for by Tesco, I can imagine that was looking into the nearby apartment?

It would seem the Cameras are set in Oakham to watch pub doors and a coffee shop so it comes as no surprise there is no CCTV of the three burglaries of Scarlet Sky
