Oakham Nightlife, Oakham, Rutland

Leicestershire Police standing by in Market Place

I have been told Oakham town centre has become a bit of a war
zone at night, so I thought I would take a look for myself last night.

There was a large police presence in town, I counted at least
4 patrol cars and a van.

I learnt last night personnel from St George's Barracks are banned
from Oakham at night because of historic behaviour.
That makes me question once again why did
Oakham Town Council honour the barracks with the freedom of the
town earlier this year?

Such a waste of local tax payers money.
I guess it was most certainly an attempt by Cllr Dewis then Mayor
to brown nose the old guard, I can't think of any other reason.

An alarm sounded at Calico at around midnight this turned out to
be a false alarm.

Most of Oakham's pubs close around this time. The only venue to
head for in town is Calico in Mill Street. This closes at 3.00am
last night it took about an hour for the town to clear of the customers
the majority head off peacefully into the night. A few forget people
live in the town and males use various door ways as toilets.

The market traders start to appear at 4.00am

I am told Calico is to increase its opening hours to 4.00am from
August.

Most customers use the road as the footpath, some smash bottles and attempt
to pull down planters.

A fight breaks out near the Congregational church, a small crowd of
males and females around a small silver car, which eventually is driven
off, the dispute continues as the small group cross into the road and
head toward Leeson's Butchers, two smashing sounds can be heard
along with raised voices. Some one removed the down pipe from the butchers
premises and smashed it.

The appearance of  two police patrol cars and a van and the subsequent chat from officers calmed the situation.

And you see a lot of this not sure what it is?

It was a locals birthday, I am not sure if it
was the man dressed only in Speedo's,  as guests
departed XY Bar some were sick before heading
towards Calico refreshed for the next round of drinks.

Whilst walking past Oakham Library a woman quickly lifted her
skirt and dropped her knickers, mid crouching there appeared
to be an explosion at first I thought she had suffered a bad curry,
but fortunately it was only liquid relief. whilst this this was all happening
her phone was bleeping like mad. She got up and started to walk and
then thought it would be a good thing to pull up her knickers.
She headed towards the smarter residential area of Oakham, Catmos
Road.

Then I spotted an old woman driving a car with no lights, I kindly
pointed to her lights and she waved smiled and continued her journey with
no lights, must of been a Rutland Tory Ladies night out again!

Oakham on Friday night was no war zone and I imagine there are
many towns that suffer a lot more from the fall out of the night time
economy? Although I was told most of the big fights if they happen
in Oakham happen on a Saturday. I am not sure Oakham would
be featured on any Cops TV show.
