A Magical Return: Root-and-Branch-Out's Lantern Walk Set for November

Root-and-Branch-Out, the Rutland-based community interest organisation, has announced the return of its much-loved Magical Lantern Walk for 2025. The community celebration is set to light up the streets of Oakham on Saturday, November 8th.

Held almost every year since 2018 (with the exception of 2020), this annual event draws inspiration from traditional Saint Martin's Day celebrations. Historically, this day sees children walk in a lantern-lit procession from a church to the town square. Root-and-Branch-Out’s walk follows this tradition, hoping to bring the community together to celebrate the changing of the season.

The procession will begin its magical journey at All Saints Church and conclude in the town square, providing a beautiful spectacle of light and community spirit.

Make Your Own Magic: Lantern Workshop Announced

To ensure the procession is as dazzling as possible, Root-and-Branch-Out is hosting a lantern making workshop ahead of the main event.

Locals can craft their own luminous creations at Oakham Castle on Saturday, November 1st, running from 11 am to 1 pm. This year's theme encourages creativity and cooperation, focusing on large lanterns that require two or more people to carry them high into the air.

This popular local event is a fantastic opportunity for a beautiful display of community and promises to be a magical, memory-making experience for Rutland's children.

To learn more about the walk and the lantern workshop, be sure to visit the Root-and-Branch-Out website.

Fōrm & Blōm: A New Destination for Quiet Luxury Opens in Mill Street, Oakham, Rutland.

Fōrm & Blōm: A New Destination for Quiet Luxury Opens in Oakham

There’s a new spot on Mill Street in Oakham, and it's bringing a fresh perspective on home and design to the heart of Rutland. Fōrm & Blōm has just opened its doors, curating a collection of understated British-made furniture, thoughtful homeware, and truly exceptional floral designs.

This isn't your typical home goods store. Fōrm & Blōm works with independent makers who embody what the shop calls "quiet luxury." This is a style that whispers rather than shouts—design rooted in heritage and a deep respect for materials with integrity. Think of furniture and homeware that feel timeless, built to last, and tell a story of careful craft.

But the shop's vision extends beyond beautifully made objects. Alongside their curated collections, they offer stunning floral arrangements. Described as "blooms with soul," these aren’t your average bouquets. Instead, they are sculptural and ever-changing designs meant to soften and enliven the spaces we live in. Fōrm & Blōm sees this blend of crafted goods and living florals as a lifestyle, one crafted directly from nature.

For now, the ground floor of the shop is open and ready for visitors. Work is currently underway to open the first floor, which promises to expand on their unique offering. Whether you’re looking to find a new piece of furniture, a unique gift, or simply a dose of inspiration, Fōrm & Blōm is a welcome addition to Oakham’s vibrant local scene.

Stalls brimming with an incredible variety of food, drink, and artisanal crafts in the Castle, Victoria Hall and the market place drawing in a steady stream of visitors.

Rutland Honours the Merchant Navy at Oakham Castle, Oakham, Rutland, 2025.

Rutland Honours the Merchant Navy at Oakham Castle, Oakham, Rutland, 2025.

On September 3rd, Rutland, marked Merchant Navy Day, raising the Red Ensign to honour the vital contributions of seafarers, past and present. The ceremony, moved from Rutland County Council offices to Oakham Castle in 2019 by Dr. Sarah Furness, the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, alongside Rutland County Council, retired Captain Bob Strick, and Uppingham Town Clerk Adam Lowe, aims to raise awareness of the Merchant Navy's crucial role in the United Kingdom's history and ongoing prosperity. As an island nation, Britain's survival and economic well-being are inextricably linked to the sea.

The Merchant Navy's service has been essential, particularly during times of conflict. During both World Wars, merchant sailors faced immense danger to ensure the continuous flow of food, fuel, and supplies to Britain. Over 30,000 merchant seafarers perished during World War II, a testament to their bravery and sacrifice. Despite these critical contributions, their service has often gone unrecognised by the public.

The UK's reliance on maritime trade remains as strong as ever, with over 90% of all imports and exports transported by sea. The Merchant Navy continues to be a cornerstone of the national economy, supporting numerous jobs and contributing significantly to the GDP. The Lord-Lieutenant emphasised that even landlocked counties like Rutland are deeply connected to this maritime lifeline, as the goods that sustain their communities arrive via the sea.

HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, President of the Seafarers’ Charity, recently highlighted the intermittent public awareness of seafarers' sacrifices, noting, "it is only during times of war that their service enters our consciousness." He called Merchant Navy Day a unique opportunity to express gratitude to seafarers and their families for their service. The ceremony in Rutland also paid tribute to individuals like Mark Woodcock and his family, whose service exemplifies the deep connection between local communities and the Merchant Navy.

As the Red Ensign was raised, the people of Rutland remembered all those who have served and continue to serve, acknowledging their vital role in securing the nation's well-being.

The exhibition is open to the public from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with free admission for all.

The Oakham Art Collective's exhibition is a highlight of the NROS event, which sees over 400 artists participating across both counties throughout September. Visitors to the Victoria Hall will find a diverse collection of pieces, with mediums including oils, pastels, acrylics, watercolours, mixed media, and textiles. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to meet the artists, learn about their creative processes, and even purchase original artworks.

This year marks a particularly exciting time for the local art community, as Oakham is a central hub for the NROS festival. In addition to the collective at Victoria Hall, Oakham Castle is also participating for the first time with an exhibition titled "Creatives at the Castle." This parallel event features 11 local artists working in a variety of disciplines, from photography and ceramics to sculpture and glass.

The Northampton and Rutland Open Studios is an annual event that aims to make art accessible to everyone. The festival features a main central exhibition at the beautiful Lamport Hall, where over 500 artworks from 270 artists are on display. Throughout the month, artists across the counties open their studios to the public, offering a behind-the-scenes look at their creative spaces. To help guide visitors, brochures with maps and details on all participating artists and venues are available at the castle and various shops and hotels around Oakham and the wider area.

Whether you're a serious art collector or simply looking for a unique weekend activity, the Oakham Art Collective exhibition at the Victoria Hall provides a perfect opportunity to support local talent and immerse yourself in the rich cultural life of the area. It's a chance to see beautiful creations, chat with the people who made them, and perhaps find the perfect piece to take home.
