The Merry Monk Oakham Rutland Complaints

The Merry Monk Oakham Rutland

In the early days of moving to Oakham I soon learnt that the management were good friends of those
connected to the local establishment.

This included the Oakham Festival, I attended some events that included some very loud and foul mouthed
acts in the garden.

The pub always received Oakham in Bloom Prizes, no surprise when the chair of the organisation is a Councillor and friend.

No one in an official position appears to ever received a complaint relating to those years.

New management took over and the complaints flooded in, strange when you consider less events
are held in the pub and the festival moved onto another location.

I think the new management did all they could to run a good pub. I have even seen the manager sweeping the street.

Open Mic nights attended by many people will be missed if the pub closes.

Oakham Town Partnership has been working very hard behind closed door to close down the
evening economy. Led by the deputy Mayor Alf Dewis and the deputy Tory leader of Rutland County Council

The partnership stinks made up of mainly of Councillors who want to hold meetings behind closed
doors.

The organisation has no code of conduct, no financial regulations it can acquire local tax payers money.
It takes money from the Gaol Street Farmers Market traders and does not have to publish accounts.

(I am thinking of setting up a market in the high street and keep the rent from the stalls to spend the money
on what I want)

Next week they are asking Oakham Town Council to share Oakham tax payers money with Uppingham.
Oakham Town Partnership is not democratic and is made up of some very bitter people including a few residents, It would be fair to describe it as a second council

WORKING WITH OAKHAM TOWN PARTNERSHIP (Appendix B)
To consider a report relating to the split of Section 106 monies with Uppingham and the
appointment of members to a joint working party and to make any decisions as appropriate

Cllr Dewis who I assume was never a young person, said publicly Calico should be closed. He appears to have succeeded there and it is looking like the Merry Monk is heading that way.

Many older residents have told me the night time trade is no worse than it was in their day and
often tell me about the 'dungeon' as it was known at the Rutland Angler now Calico.

Young people are not that welcome in the larger chains so where does the Town Council and the partnership think these young people will go out to enjoy themselves.

I guess they could always bring a cube of beer to a band concert in Cutts Close!

Recent post on the Merry Monk Facebook page expresses their frustration
