Oakham Town Council Fitness Centre Princess Avenue Oakham Rutland Cllrs Stubbs and Dewis Report
Oakham Town Council attempted to deal with this item at the last meeting of 2014
being open and transparent they attempted and not for the first time to unlawfully
exclude the public and press from the consideration.
After raising objection before and during the meeting the item was eventually deferred
until this Wednesday.
Over the years this council has failed to get the most out of properties it hold in trust
for the residents of Oakham.
The current tenant through although known to Cllr Alf Dewis the deputy Mayor have
not done anything wrong.
If they stayed for the term of the lease the council would recoup the money it spent on
the property and make a tiny profit of around £2000.
The council previously let the building for peanuts and ended up with tenant who sublet.
Both Cllr Dewis and Stubbs are suggesting the Council let the property. Continuing to
let it below the market value.
The first option of a person who want's to run a nursery school. Strange when you
consider Oakham does not have a shortage of nursery spaces.
The Ark and Scallywags are on the doorstep.
The second option is daft and is probably the option the town council will approve,
It is suggested this application could be coming from the same friend of the council
who was permitted to sell food and coffee from a van in Cutts Close for almost no
rent. Which resulted in loss of sales at to nearby independent coffee shops.
The persons plan may not be daft but the suggestion they should have the
building for a period rent free and then the uncertainty that the council may even
get some rent. Who is going to pay for the over costs such as Electricity and Insurance?
The two Councillors attempt to put of a move into the building by the council suggesting
it would cost £50,000 to make the property suitable. Where are the quotes?
Oakham Town Council will pay that and more in rent over the next five years.
If they moved they would not pay rent and the fitness centre could become
a shared space Council Office and Community Hub.
Then possibly they could consider both options being able to use the spaces
The property is apparently valued at £200,000 so it shocks me to see
demolition is at the top of the list of options.
Cllr Alf Dewis can be heard on one of my videos supporting this option what a
fool our bullying deputy Mayor is!
