Barrington Cement Works and Quarry Remembered

Barrington Cement Works and Quarry Remembered

Sunday July 19th

Event Summary

On a public open day to be held on Sunday 19th July the museum is to mark 10 years since the closure of the last surviving quarry railway in the UK formerly operated at the now closed Barrington Cement Works in Cambridgeshire. Happily whist the old quarry railway has passed into industrial history a number of the old quarry locomotives have found a new home at Rocks by Rail – The Living Ironstone Museum near Cottesmore, Rutland.

The museum open day will run from 11am to 5pm and the former Barrington diesel locos will be on display together with a themed photographic exhibition of the old quarry railway. It is expected that steam hauled brakevan rides will be on offer. It is also hoped that a trial start-up of one of the Barrington locos will be undertaken in the early afternoon as its restoration nears completion.

Until 2005 Barrington Cement Works quarry was home to the last surviving standard gauge quarry railway in the UK. In a I hour long DVD a personal perspective of the history of the Works and Quarry is retold by John Drayton MBE, who spent his whole working life at the site. John was instrumental in organising the Works Open Days in the past which saw on occasion a return of preserved steam locos on the quarry lines. In an evocative look back at his life and times John catalogues a whole range of personal experiences brought poignantly to life through the use of archive photos and films, including coverage of the quarry railways and some glimpses of the Barrington Light Railway.

Copies of “ A walk back through time at Barrington Cement Works 2008 – 1900 and beyond ” by John Drayton MBE will be available to purchase at the Museum on the day .
