Oakham Town Council's £48,000 Skatepark Closed due to safety defects known by the Town Clerk but ignored.
Dear Mr Dewis (Chairman of Oakham Town Council)
I am disappointed and concerned to see the skatepark in Cutts Close has been closed for safety reasons.
If it were not for the clerks incompetence we would not be finding ourselves in this embarrassing
situation during the half term holiday.
Before the Clerk paid Calloo I spent some time on the site pointing out dangerous defects, the
meeting wasted my time because all that was noted by the clerk was ignored and he paid the
£48,000 being demanded by Calloo. At more than one meeting I raised this issue and was ignored.
Today I passed the skatepark and noticed the end panels of fencing at both ends of the skatepark
had been removed and children were using the closed park.
I find your response to my phone call totally unacceptable and possibly negligent.
It is unacceptable to just respond with if they pull the fence down and get injured they
can not claim.
Some of the children who were using the skatepark are of a very young age and small and would
not been able to pull down and move the fencing.
The contractors who put up the fencing to close the skate park failed to secure the fencing
adequately. Although there are sufficient panel laying beside the skate park they chose not to
install it all round the park and butted two ends up the castle fencing this were not secured the
castles fencing.
You also tell me the large swing at Royce Recreation Ground has been fenced of for
safety and you are aware the fencing there has been pulled down. The council has
responsibility to ensure people safety at all times and how ever inconvenient it is for
some if the fence protecting people from harm is damaged it must be repaired as
soon as possible if not we could be see as negligent. Cllr Lucas reported the
damage more than once some months ago. I also reported the damge to the clerk
who said the repairs would be carried out once again for some reason he appears
to have neglected his duties and because of this the damage has increased and
will cost hundreds of pounds more than if it was repaired months ago.
I have repositioned the fencing in Cutts Close and request the council gets the
contractor to return and put up the fence they failed to use and secure the skatepark
before a child is injured.
