Oakham Town Council Hanging Baskets

For some time I have been concerned about the considerable cost of the hanging baskets
which going up around the town each year. Each basket costing nearly £100 each.
Yesterday I decided to write to our acting Clerk about this matter as normal this has
caused some irritation and prompted our chairman Cllr Adam Lowe to write to her
telling her to ignore me as normal. No individual Councillor including the chairman
has the powers to tell the Clerk what to do. This is the very reason the Town Council
finds it self in such a mess. A Chairman of the council is not a leader and has no
more powers than any other member. I hope the Clerk reminded the Chairman
that she is not answerable to any individual Councillor including him.

Email I sent:

Hi Allison

Could the council consider seeking sponsorship next year for the baskets

Other towns seek sponsorship from business

I am not sure how locations were decided this year

The opticians in Burley Road had their own baskets now thrown of the ground and replaced with two of ours. These are not very visible from the street or the town centre so I would question if it is even correct or legal for us to provide these.

Oakham cycle centre and tool hire centre have around £1000 of baskets s this not excessive when market street has 1 basket.

I understand many retailers refused the basket due to size could we not look into providing smaller ones so there are actually a lot more in the town?

Cllr Adam Lowes email to the Clerk which is very typical why is he instructing the
Clerk? And when he and he deputy read the good Cllr guide the chairman has
no powers outside of meetings they are not permitted to run this council.

Allison

You cannot answer this as you do not speak for all Cllrs and you are not the personal PA to any Cllr.

Push this request back stating that the individual needs to raise an agenda item.

If Cllr Brookes wishes, it would need to come to Council with an agenda item.

Regards

Adam Lowe
