Sarah Outen MBE - receives Honorary Degree from University of Leicester




The University of Leicester has conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws upon Sarah Outen MBE. who lives in Oakham Rutland

Sarah Outen attended Stamford High School before reading Biology at St Hugh’s College, Oxford, where she began her rowing career. Her first major expedition was a solo row across the Indian Ocean in 2009; she was the youngest person and the youngest female to achieve this. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society shortly afterwards.

She was also appointed Vice-President of the Leicester Rowing Club, Vice-Patron of the Jubilee Sailing Trust and finalist for the best travel blog in the UK Press Awards, and she published her first book, A Dip In The Ocean: Rowing Solo Across the Indian Ocean.

She was appointed MBE in the 2011 Birthday Honours for services to rowing, conservation and charity. She then embarked on an expedition called London2London: Via the World, which involved a mostly solo loop of the world by rowing, kayaking and cycling.

She completed this journey at Tower Bridge on 3 November 2015, after cycling across Europe and Asia, rowing across the north Pacific, cycling across parts of America and Canada to Cape Cod and rowing across the north Atlantic, claiming many records along the way, including being the first person to row from Japan to Alaska, which involved 150 days at sea.

She has won numerous awards and now uses her position as a motivational speaker to inspire young people, particularly women.
