Following an external report into the council finances, Oakham Town Council has confirmed that the Clerk responsible for managing its books has left the authority.

Oakham Town Council, Mr Benjamin Tassell, Town Clerk is no longer employed by Oakham Town Council.

Following an external report into the council finances, Oakham Town Council has confirmed that the officer responsible for managing its books has left the authority.

It has not revealed how much public money has been lost or if the loss was theft of poor accounting.

The council no longer draws petty cash from the bank, after the inspection found there were no receipts or records kept for that spending.

The external accountant found 'weakness' in Oakham Town Council's financial practice, this included breaches of financial regulations and a poor internal auditor.

Cllr Dave Romney objected to the £500 being spent on the investigation, stating 'it was a waste of money' The same Cllr persuaded all members of the council to raise a conduct complaint against a member who reported the loss of public money to Leicestershire Police.

The Clerk and Town Council agreed a mutual agreement to terminate the Clerks employment with Oakham Town Council.

Before the Clerk departed he employed the services of a solicitor to threaten a member of the council, wrongly claiming they leaked information about him to members of the public to discredit him on social media. No one needed to do that his own actions or lack of them was public knowledge. The KPMG external auditors report clearly states he refused to answer their questions about the finances.
