Field Row Unitarian Chapel Belper Derbyshire

 


Field Row Unitarian Chapel is a Grade II* listed building in Belper, Derbyshire, England. It was built in 1788 by Jedediah Strutt, a wealthy industrialist and one of the founders of the town. 

The chapel is a simple, austere building in the neoclassical style. It has a rectangular plan with a hipped roof and a portico with four Doric columns. The interior of the chapel is also simple, with a plain whitewashed walls and a gallery at the rear. The chapel is still in use today and is a popular venue for weddings and other events.

Jedediah Strutt was born in 1729 in Derby, England. He was the son of a stocking weaver and began working in the family business at a young age. In 1753, he moved to Belper and set up his own business. Strutt was a successful businessman and his mills made him a wealthy man. He was also a religious man and was a member of the Unitarian church.

Field Row Unitarian Chapel is still in use today. It is a popular venue for weddings and other events. The chapel is also a reminder of the religious and social history of Belper. It is a testament to the generosity of Jedediah Strutt and his commitment to the Unitarian faith.
