"The decision regarding Catmose Sports Centre has evolved from a question of management contract renewal to a broader discussion about responsible use of public funds at a time of financial strain. After two separate attempts at procurement, it became evident that awarding a new leisure contract would incur significant costs for the Council and local taxpayers for at least the next decade.
Faced with this reality, Councillors have made the difficult decision to prioritise flood management and climate change initiatives over subsidizing local leisure facilities in Oakham. These critical areas will benefit from the redirected funds, allowing the Council to bolster flood defenses and establish a dedicated Climate Change Officer position to support the entire County.
This was not an easy choice, but it reflects the Council's commitment to responsible fiscal management and long-term sustainability for Rutland."
