Oakham Town Council is flying the flag at half-mast in honour of Bart Hellyer, a long-time resident of Rutland who recently passed away.
Mr. Hellyer lived in Rutland for the past 40 years. After a life-altering injury during his university years in Exeter, he became a paraplegic and used a wheelchair throughout his life. He resided in the Uppingham area and faced the loss of his wife to cancer in 2004. Caregivers provided support for him at home.
Despite his physical challenges, Mr. Hellyer remained actively involved in the community. He was a lifelong patient at the National Spinal Injuries Centre, Stoke Mandeville Hospital. He served as the High Sheriff of Rutland from 2012 to 2013, gaining valuable insights into county life. Since 2013, he held the prestigious position of Deputy Lieutenant for Rutland.
Mr. Hellyer's dedication extended beyond government service. In 1974, alongside Baroness Masham and others, he co-founded the national charity Spinal Injuries Association (SIA). He remained a member throughout his life, even serving as Chair from 2005 to 2008. The SIA continues to be a leading advocate for those with spinal cord injuries.
Since 2014, Mr. Hellyer actively participated in Healthwatch Rutland. He will be remembered by many for his contributions to the community.
I recall him fondly as a very personable High Sheriff who served Rutland admirably.
