Rutland Churches Shine Purple in Support of World Polio Day
This World Polio Day, October 24th, 2024, the Rotary Club of Rutland is taking a visible stand in the fight to eradicate polio from the face of the earth. Several churches across Rutland will be bathed in a vibrant purple light, symbolising the ongoing effort to eliminate this crippling disease.
Polio was once a major threat in many countries, including the UK. However, thanks to decades of tireless work, wild-type polio is now confined to just two countries: Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Rotary Club of Rutland has been a dedicated player in this global fight. Through various fundraising activities and educational programs, they've helped raise awareness and support for mass immunisation campaigns around the world.
The chosen illumination colour holds special meaning. The purple dye used to mark a child's finger after receiving the life-saving polio vaccine has become a powerful symbol of this ongoing battle. By lighting up churches in purple, the Rotary Club and the participating churches aim to re-energise local support for polio eradication.
