Rutland Re-Joining Leicestershire? Local Views Were Sought by ITV Central News

Rutland Re-Joining Leicestershire? Local Views Were Sought by ITV Central News

With the government's devolution plans potentially on the horizon, the possibility of Rutland re-joining Leicestershire has once again become a topic of conversation. Central TV News was reaching out to the residents of Oakham and the wider Rutland community to gather their opinions on this issue.

Historically, Rutland's relationship with Leicestershire has been complex. In 1974, Rutland lost its county status and was merged with Leicestershire, a move that was met with fierce resistance from local residents. The people of Rutland fought tirelessly for their independence, ultimately achieving it on April 1st, 1997. This hard-won freedom has instilled a strong sense of local identity within the Rutland community.

Now, faced with the prospect of a potential re-merger, many Rutlanders are likely to feel apprehensive. The fear of losing their hard-won autonomy and the potential impact on local services and decision-making processes are likely to be significant concerns.

Central TV News was keen to hear from the residents of Oakham and Rutland on this crucial issue.
