Oakham Celebrates Spot on The Sunday Times' Best Places to Live Guide
Oakham, the charming market town in the heart of Rutland, has been recognised as one of the best places to live in the Midlands by The Sunday Times. This year marks Oakham's debut in the prestigious guide, joining its Rutland neighbours Stamford and Uppingham, which have been consistent favourites in previous years.
The Sunday Times' judging panel lauded Oakham as both "pretty and practical," highlighting its unique appeal within England's smallest county. Tim Palmer, a judge and writer for the guide, emphasised the importance of community spirit in their selection process. "One thing we look for more than anything else are places with good community spirit, where people who live there really enjoy living there," he stated, adding, "You don’t find that anywhere better than Rutland."
While Stamford and Uppingham have previously graced the list, the judges felt it was Oakham's time to shine. They noted that the town offers slightly more value for money in terms of housing compared to other areas in Rutland, without compromising on quality of life.
Oakham impressed the judges with its vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings. The guide specifically praised its excellent restaurants, a delightful selection of independent shops, and a growing focus on wellness. The town's convenient railway station and its proximity to the stunning Rutland Water were also highlighted as significant advantages for residents.
The Sunday Times painted a picture of a thriving community hub, mentioning the twice-weekly market, the monthly cinema at the Rutland County Museum, and the regular art exhibitions, performances, and classes held at Victoria Hall. Local businesses like Hambleton Bakery, Connie Taylor Ceramics, and Darn Knit were also given a nod, showcasing the town's unique character.
Interestingly, the guide also touched upon the ongoing campaign in Rutland to maintain its independence amidst devolution proposals. While not taking a political stance, Tim Palmer acknowledged the strong community sentiment reflected in this movement, stating, "The fact people care that much is a sign of a place with a really good community." He further emphasised Rutland's special identity as England's smallest county with so much to offer.
The Sunday Times' methodology for selecting the best places to live is comprehensive, taking into account factors ranging from the quality of schools and transport links to broadband speeds, cultural scene, access to green spaces, and the health of the high street. This year, the judges specifically sought out improving locations with a strong sense of community, rather than simply focusing on affluent areas.
Tim Palmer aptly described Oakham as "a good small town," recognising the resilience of such towns in the current economic climate. "Small towns had a bit of a reputation but they are the ones surviving the down turn of the High Street," he explained, adding, "Their whole identity isn’t based on major chains."
