Barry Grummett Former Leicestershire Police Officer Jailed for 10 Years over 1970s Sexual Abuse

Former Leicestershire Police Officer Jailed for 10 Years over 1970s Sexual Abuse
A former police officer who raped a teenage girl and sexually assaulted a woman in the 1970s has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, bringing a delayed end to crimes committed nearly half a century ago.

Barry Grummett, 86, of Loughborough Road, Hathern, was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court following a trial that concluded with guilty verdicts for one count of rape and three counts of indecent assault.

Grummett served as an officer for Leicestershire Constabulary between September 1970 and October 1981.

In 1977, Grummett attended the home of a teenage girl to check on her after she failed to attend school. While alone inside the Leicestershire property, he raped her. Over the following 18 months, Grummett returned to the address on multiple occasions and subjected the girl to further sexual assaults.

During the late 1970s, Grummett also sexually assaulted a second victim—an adult woman—at an address where they were alone. While he was off-duty during this second incident, prosecutors demonstrated how he exploited his standing and authority to carry out the attacks.

The offences were first reported to Leicestershire Police in 2023. Grummett denied all allegations during a voluntary interview. Following a trial at Leicester Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of all charges on October 1, culminating in his 10-year prison sentence.
Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Inspector Amanda Boswell, from the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU), commended the courage of the survivors:

"The force takes reports of rape and sexual assault extremely seriously and will always work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
"Grummett was working as a police officer—a position that carries great responsibility and trust. Taking advantage of and abusing that role for sexual gratification will simply not be tolerated.

"Both victims must be commended for coming forward and providing evidence in front of a jury that has resulted in him finally being brought to justice for what he did nearly 50 years ago. I hope this outcome provides them with a degree of closure and allows them to move on with their lives as best they can."

Detective Inspector Boswell added an encouragement to others: "I would also encourage any other victims of non-recent sexual abuse either at the hands of Grummett or by someone else—to come forward and seek justice. Please be reassured that it's never too late to speak out."
