At the Conservative Party Conference, Party Leader Kemi Badenoch set out a clear, principled plan aimed at delivering a stronger economy and a stronger country. Her address rested upon a simple belief shared by many residents across Rutland & Stamford: what you earn belongs to you, not to the government.

For families across our local communities whose homes, farms, and small businesses have so often passed down through the generations with care and hard work these proposals represent a decisive shift in policy.

The flagship announcement of the conference address directly targeted the taxation of family legacies. Under the proposed measures, a future Conservative government would abolish inheritance tax on the family home.

Furthermore, couples would be able to pass on an additional £1 million tax-free in other assets, significantly reducing the tax burden on ordinary households and halving the total number of estates subject to death duties.

To support younger generations entering the housing market, the party pledged to cut regulations and slash red tape—including replacing Section 106 agreements and net zero building mandates. By lowering development costs by up to £50,000 per build, the plan aims to give young people a fair chance to purchase a home within the local communities where they grew up.

Alongside housing and tax measures, Kemi Badenoch detailed broad initiatives across economic policy, national defence, and justice.

Introducing a strict "work-first" approach backed by a £71 billion reduction in government and welfare spending. Measures include halving Employer National Insurance contributions for workers aged 21–24 (from 15% to 7.5%) to incentivise youth employment and ensure that everyone who can work does work.

The Britannia Shield: Allocating £10 billion over a decade to establish the "Britannia Shield" a modern, integrated missile and drone defence system designed to protect the UK and its overseas sovereign territories.

50,000 New Prison Places: Investing £2 billion annually funded in part by repurposing foreign aid budgets—to construct 50,000 new prison places, ending soft early-release schemes so offenders face meaningful legal consequences.

Delivering Locally in Rutland & Stamford

National objectives must align with practical local governance. Here in Rutland & Stamford, Conservative councillors and our Member of Parliament say they have actively delivered on key local priorities:

Defending Rutland's Sovereignty, safeguarding local decision-making and protecting the county’s unique identity and governance.

Road Safety Enhancements, campaigning directly for lower, safer speed limits along key transit routes, including the A15.

Household Cost Relief, freezing green bin collection charges and local car parking fees to help ease household expenses.

Looking ahead to 2027, the local organisation aims to reclaim seats across South Kesteven, Rutland, and Harborough while continuing to support our Member of Parliament, Alicia Kearns.

Charlotte Vernon, Deputy Chairman Membership, Rutland & Stamford Conservatives says achieving these goals requires strong engagement from local members.

Charlotte is asking residents "to consider joining as a member, residents can directly participate in selecting prospective candidates, shaping local campaigns, and engaging with neighbours focused on the future of Rutland & Stamford. Participation can be tailored to individual preferences no prior political background is required, only a shared conviction that individuals and families should retain more of what they earn"

"While political opponents continue to advocate higher state expenditure and taxation, the Conservative Party offers a clear alternative focused on economic growth and personal ownership. We invite residents to join Kemi’s Team locally in Rutland & Stamford to help build a stronger Britain."
