Rutland councillors threatened with injunction switch to UKIP

Nick Wainwright, Richard Gale and David Richardson and Nigel Farage
Nick Wainwright, Richard Gale and David Richardson were welcomed into the
UKIP fold by leader Nigel Farage

Tim Parker Political Reporter, BBC Leicester

These three independents have always said they were looking for greater openness and democracy.

But since the beginning of the year, they've been required to make all contact with the council through a single point after it was suggested their correspondence was becoming personal and persistent.

They hope this move will strengthen their efforts to get answers and help improve their relationship with the authority.

UKIP national leader Nigel Farage told me these three councillors will help build a proper structure for UKIP in Rutland and a platform to greater things.

Tim Parker Political Reporter, BBC Leicester, Rutland Anti-Corruption Group, Localism Act

Tim Parker Political Reporter, BBC Leicester

So Rutland Anti-Corruption Group councillors face possible court action for what they claim is simply doing their job - looking for openness and transparency and asking legitimate questions about council business. Rutland County Council suggests the group's correspondence could be seen as becoming personal, persistent and even defamatory. The authority says it's as open as any other council and has nothing to hide.

What's worrying for all parties is the effect of this row on the council's image and ability to do its job.

But of even wider concern, for any councillor who's ever fired off a heat-of-the-moment email, is the fact that specialist solicitors brought in to advise Rutland County Council suggest it could now sue for defamation. Once the preserve of individuals, the Localism Act could now extend that to local government bodies.

If the council does decide to take things that far, it could set a chilling precedent for any councillor who feels that after two or three exchanges with the powers that be, they still aren't getting the answers they're looking for.

I think:

If Rutland County Council do decide to take legal action, it will have serious implications for
local democracy. with incredible low voter turn out at elections. Many of the councillors already being elected unopposed or co-opted, local governance will be avoided by most people and leave the power  in the hands of the few Who bully and expose people who critises them to the most disgusting conduct.

Rupal Rajani, BBC Leicester, Broadcast Live From Oakham Rutland Today, Photographs

Rupal Rajani, BBC Leicester, Broadcast Live From Oakham Rutland Today,

On a cold and very foggy afternoon, Rupal Rajani from BBC Leicester came to Oakham,

Rupal started her show interviewing Oakham Mayor Councillor Alf Dewis who is also the
Town Partnership Chairman and a lot more, then it was the turn of Councillor Joyce Lucas.

Before the interview, I spoke with Cllr Dewis and asked what hat he was wearing for the interview
he has so many other roles. I asked if he minded if  I photographed him in public being courteous.
Although I could just snap away. I did not ask Cllr Lucas, she is so rude to me lately I not going
to waste my energy speaking to her. Cllr Dewis said I could not photograph him. So I was prepared
not to take the photos and then Cllr Dewis said he had changed his mind. That can only be described
as a power trip for him, which failed  miserably for him. I found it rather funny when Cllr Lucas took her camera out and photographed him. I could not resist in telling her that Alf did not want to be photographed today!

I am pleased to say once the councillors departed, even though it was very cold every one
had a fab time in and around Gaol Street.

Those who did not listen or pop down missed a real treat Charlotte a 16 year old pupil from
Oakham School sang for the listeners live. her voice is very special. Oakham School will be
placing a link on their web site www.oakham.rutland.sch.uk  and the BBC Leicester website www.bbc.co.uk/radioleicester.will also have a recording of the
show. The singing of Silent Night was a very moving and a peaceful song to hear in Gaol Street
remembering the tragedy that happened there this summer.

O dear! that's me! I handed my other camera to one of the kind
production ladies and I can call it punishment for all those pictures
I have taken of others over the years.

Now Rutland County Council or Oakham Town Council this was
not a live interview. The BBC Solicitors are currently reviewing the
tapes for libel, slander and anything else... they should be
completed for broadcast by 2099 and to think Rupal only asked
me my opinion about our local councils....
