Rutland County Council, Storm Claudia Update: Rutland Flooding and Road Safety Warning

Rutland County Council has issued an urgent update and strong safety advice as Storm Claudia brings heavy rain and strong winds, causing localised flooding and road disruption across the county.

An Amber weather alert for heavy rain remains in place until midnight tonight, Friday, followed by a Yellow alert until 6:00 am Saturday morning. Residents are urged to prepare for further downpours and strong winds throughout the evening.

Current Impact and Road Closures

The Council has confirmed surface water accumulation and several road closures, stressing that these measures are in place for public safety.

Full Road Closure

  • Main Street, Seaton

Single Lane Closures

  • Junction of Catmos Street and South Street, Oakham

  • Junction of Station Road and Kilburn Road, Oakham

  • Junction of Stamford Road and Casterton Lane, Tinwell

Standing Water Reported

  • Derwent Drive Bridge, Oakham

Flood Alert

Flood Alert—meaning flooding is possible—remains active for the River Wreake catchment, which includes Langham Brook and Whissendine Brook. This is not a Flood Warning (which means flooding is expected).

Message to Residents: Safety First

The Council’s primary message is one of extreme caution for everyone, particularly road users heading into the evening.

  • DO NOT walk or drive through flood water. The depth can be difficult to judge, especially in the dark, and hidden hazards like debris or missing drain covers may be present.

  • DO NOT ignore road closed signs or flood boards—they are in place for your safety.

  • Road users should take extra care, especially on rural roads, by slowing down and allowing extra space and time for journeys.
