The Burley Road car park Oakham will be closed on Sunday 20th September 2015
This is so the council can safely carry out work to remove trees from the surrounding
castle ramparts.
Work has started inside the castle grounds to remove many trees.
It is my personal opinion that this project is not restoration
it is re-creation and destruction and will have a profound impact
upon wildlife and the visual appearance of Cutts Close and
Burley Road.
Walking around the wall and grounds it is difficult to see
many remains of the walls, people who are interested in
visiting ruins are not that keen on seeing modern day rebuilds.
Before the trees are cut down ecologists above climb and inspect
them for bats. None have been found so far in the trees.
They have found bats in the Castle / Great Hall and these
will be protected.
If any are found in trees they will be removed under licence.
If they find any places where bats might like to move in
they block those.
