The End of an Era, Rutland Lions Club Calls Time on Iconic 40-Year Fireworks Display
After four decades of lighting up the skies above Oakham, the Lions Club of Rutland has announced the difficult decision to permanently cancel its beloved annual fireworks display. What began as a modest community gathering decades ago grew into a massive regional attraction, drawing thousands of spectators to the Rutland Showground each year. However, the sheer scale, mounting logistical hurdles, and upcoming regulatory burdens have ultimately outgrown the capacity of the volunteer-run organization, bringing a bittersweet close to a proud local tradition.

The fireworks display has deep roots in the community. Over the past forty years, the event evolved alongside the town itself. It was initially hosted on the grounds of Oakham School before relocating to the old Rutland Showground, and finally settling at the new Rutland Showground site in 2014. Beyond providing entertainment, the event served as one of the Lions Club's most critical annual fundraisers. The proceeds allowed the organization to funnel substantial donations back into the community, supporting numerous Rutland residents and deserving local causes in their times of need.

Yet, the very popularity that made the event such a financial success also planted the seeds of its conclusion. According to Lions Club President Allan Grey, the mounting crowds brought exponential increases in operational and safety considerations. Safely delivering an event of that magnitude required an immense mobilization of human resources. In recent years, the club found itself needing to deploy between 40 and 45 volunteers just to marshal the grounds, manage off-street parking, and oversee critical road-crossing locations.

Allan Grey pointed out that the greatest logistical hazard came at the very end of the evening, when several thousand attendees needed to be guided safely back toward the bypass in a short window of time. Managing pedestrian flow and vehicular congestion placed an unsustainable strain on a volunteer workforce. Furthermore, the club was forced to look ahead to the horizon of future regulations, specifically the impending implementation of Martyn’s Law. Set to take effect in 2027, this legislation requires rigorous anti-terrorism risk management controls for public venues a compliance standard that far exceeds the operational scope of a local service club.
Despite the disappointment of bringing the 40-year tradition to a close, the prevailing sentiment from the leadership is one of profound gratitude. In his final statement, Grey extended heartfelt thanks to the myriad individuals, partners, and businesses whose collaboration kept the sparks flying for so many years. He specifically acknowledged the Rutland Agricultural Society for providing the use of the Showground, and Oakham Rugby Club for seamlessly organizing the catering and club bar facilities.
Special appreciation was also directed toward local enterprises such as Lands' End, Mecc Alte, and several other businesses that generously opened their corporate car parks to reduce residential road congestion during the busy evenings. While the Rutland Showground will be noticeably quieter come November in future years, the legacy of community support, generosity, and shared joy left behind by the Lions Club fireworks display will undoubtedly endure across the region.
