The End of an Era, The Larder in Oakham Announces Final Closure

The End of an Era, The Larder in Oakham Announces Final Closure

Oakham is losing one of its most cherished independent staples. With a heavy heart, the owners of The Larder on Mill Street has announced that the popular café closed its doors for the final time.

The decision marks the end of a remarkable chapter for a business that has long been considered a pillar of the local community. Like many independent hospitality venues across the country, the team behind The Larder faced what they described as a "perfect storm" of modern economic pressures. Ongoing staffing recruitment difficulties, sharply increasing operational costs, and a noticeable reduction in foot traffic on the high street ultimately made it impossible to keep the Mill Street location running.

Since opening, The Larder carved out a special place in the hearts of Oakham residents. Known for its commitment to local, quality ingredients, warm atmosphere, and exceptional coffee and home-cooked food, it became a daily ritual for many. Beyond its regular service, the café earned deep community respect during challenging times such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the team temporarily transitioned into a hub that cooked and delivered hundreds of free meals to vulnerable households and isolated residents across Rutland.

In their emotional farewell statement, the owners expressed profound gratitude to everyone who walked through their doors.

"Whether you visited us every day or just stopped by occasionally, you became part of our journey. We’ve shared so many great moments, met some truly amazing people, and built friendships that we’ll always treasure."

They also paid tribute to their hard-working team, both past and present, whose smiles and dedication defined the spirit of the café.

True to their community-first ethos, the team used their closing announcement to champion other small businesses in the area. Emphasising that independent businesses are the beating heart of the town, they encouraged locals to continue supporting Oakham's vibrant network of cafés and shops, explicitly highlighting spots like Fika on Mill Street and Otters Fine Foods on the High Street, alongside other brilliant local independents.

While the closure of the Mill Street shop marks a sad loss for Oakham's town center, regular patrons haven't seen the absolute end of The Larder. The team has confirmed that their sister location, The Larder at Burrough Court (situated nearby in a scenic rural setting), remains fully open and operational. Fans can still travel to Burrough Court to enjoy the signature lunches, cracking coffee, and welcoming atmosphere they have grown to love.

As The Larder closes its doors in Oakham, it leaves behind a legacy defined by great food, deep human connections, and the true spirit of community.
