Corby town centre fire

Four people have been arrested following a fire at the Willow Place car park in Corby last night, although police believe other people may also have been involved.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 6.15pm and police officers helped to evacuate nearby properties while the fire service managed and extinguished the fire.

The cause of the fire is still to be established, with fire investigators and police scenes of crime officers attending the building this morning.

However, police arrested four people in Corby last night on suspicion of arson. Two teenage boys, aged 14 and 17 and two men, aged 19 and 20, remain in custody this morning, say Northamptonshire Police.

Despite these arrests, police believe other people may also have been involved in the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Lyall, said: “This was a large fire that caused significant damage to the car park and nearby shops.

“We would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the area late yesterday afternoon and saw anything suspicious or who may have any information about the fire

“We would also like to speak to anyone who may have seen a group of young people running away from the scene just after 6pm and we would also like to speak to anyone who lives with anyone who returned home last night smelling of smoke and acting suspiciously.

“Witnesses or anyone with information about this incident are asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Northamptonshire Police say patrols will be taking place in the town centre today to offer reassurance to anyone who may have any concerns.

Anne Street remains closed while the investigation takes place.

Today the following Willow Place shops were closed : Evans, Dororthy Perkins, Burton and River Island - the multi-storey car park will be closed until further notice.
