Oakham South East Town Council Election

Oakham South East

The Town Council has also been informed that no election has been called for the two vacant seats in Oakham South East.

It has, therefore, been given permission to co-opt two people on to the Council.

There are certain criteria for a person to be co-opted and they must fulfil one or more of the following:

a) The person must be a registered elector for the parish

b) The person must have lived in the parish for the preceding 12 months or within 3 miles of the parish boundary

c) The person must have occupied land in the parish either as a tenant or owner forthe preceding 12 months

d) The person must have had their principle place of work in the parish for the preceding 12 months.

In addition there are a number of other reasons that disqualify a member of the public from being a member of a Town / Parish Council. A full list is available from Rutland County Council

Anyone who wishes to be considered for co-option is asked to contact the Clerk to the Council for an informal discussion about the role of a Town Councillor and the responsibilities that go with it.

Oakham Town Council has a set procedure for filling vacancies by co-option.

This will initially involve an interested person writing into the Council explaining why they wish to be considered and will then ultimately entail an interview by members of the Council.

However, there is no time limit stipulated and the matter will be discussed at the meeting of the Town Council scheduled for April 7th 2010 when a suitable timetable will be agreed.
