Over the weekend customers of the newly opened pub, The Lord Nelson Oakham were complaining via Twitter tweeting the pub was, turning away customers with children.
Ross Dykes, Operations Manager from The Thurlby Group the owners of the pub said:
We do accept children during the day over the age of 10 before 5pm but we are a strictly adult environment at night. We are trying to avoid very young children during the day as we have open fires that are not always supervised, candles burning all around the pub and a very steep staircase which is all quite dangerous for younger children.
We appreciate all of the local people using the pub but are trying very much to keep it as a licenced pub as apposed to a restaurant and therefore more of an adults pub.
His last sentence surprised left me a little surprised because after my first visit, this was an evening I left feeling I had visited a fine local restaurant.
I would suggest to anyone who is looking for a family friendly place to eat, they call and speak to the management to clarify their policy beforehand.
I read on Twitter this customer was mid meal and they were asked to leave, if this is true that is rather shocking.
Oakham is fortunate to be served by a large variety of eating and drinking places. All of those establishments have varying policies.
I did find it shocking to see one mother recently in a local bar, mid morning attempting to manoeuvre her buggy through a busy bar, holding a glass of wine in one hand and the babies bottle precariously balanced on the cover. When you see activity like this I can understand some bar owners have concerns for health and safety.
