Looking at Oakham People this morning I was not surprised to read the following post:

The streets are covered in broken glass, there is over turned plant pots and soil everywhere and the maltings shutter has been vadelised to the point It doesn't look like it will open!
It really is awful that these people do this to our town. I would hate to own a shop in Oakham through the fear of what would happen to it over the weekend and the costs in may occur. It must be hard enough in this current climate for business owners without having to worry about this vandelism happening.
Surely the Rutland County Council must be aware of the situation?Oakham is defiantley feeling sorry for itself this morning such a shame- it really used to be a beatiful town.

I took a walk to see what was going on.
There was glass broken in Mill Street, The High Street, Gaol Street, Church Street and the market place.
The town was also littered with the black cable ties used to secure Christmas lights.
A closer inspection of the glass revealed this was broken light bulbs.
You would think a contractor who is paid £10,000 to put up and take down strings of lights each year
would have been able to invest in a broom to clear up.
Unfortunately Rutland County Council can not afford to employee more than one street cleaner here in Oakham they only work Monday - Frida. leaving the town and car parks looking a total mess most weekends. I often wonder what the visitors think of the mess.
I saw people carrying their dogs on Church Street this made me think of the Conservatives Big Society.
The people pay huge sums of money to their council they provide a shoddy service and we must not complain and do a bit of DIY so I returned home to collect a rubbish sack and a dust pan and brush to clean up.
If cost £10,000 to hang a few strings of lights, 2 mornings work I will other to sweep up behind the contractor for £5,000 this year that is around double JSA.
