Verse 2012: Stamford Poetry Festival

During this weekend Mark will be facilitating workshops and performing as one half of the hugely successful poetry duo 'Dead Poets', performing his one-man poetry show 'Shetland Boy', hosting the 'Pint of Poetry' open mic, writing poems for the Poetry Takeaway and available to chat to in the Open Surgery on Saturday afternoon.
Mark has been touring nationally for the past year. During this time, he's met loads of people, and then forgotten pretty much all of them. Most people can remember names. Or dates. Or the location of their hotel. Most people can remember where they grew up; or the street they lived in. But Mark can't. Which is odd. Particularly if all those early things people can remember happened on an island with less than a thousand inhabitants; with seals and puffins and bogs and Vikings and the fastest wind speed ever recorded in the UK.
Well, enough is enough. In his new one man show, Mark attempts to teach his memory who's boss whilst rediscovering Britain's most remote island, Unst. Come and enjoy his lyrical storytelling ... and absurdly big hat.

Mark Grist has been an English teacher and performance poet since 2005. He's been Peterborough's Poet Laureate in 2008, Chief Bard of the Fens in 2009 and a UK Slam Championship finalist in 2010. Mark's had many of his pieces for children published and is currently completing his first full collection, 'Arthur is Ugly'. Mark is also currently working for the CCE and Writer's Centre Norwich as a literacy consultant and delivers intervention in English teaching to over 30 schools in the country. Mark also completed his Masters in Life and Creative Writing at Goldsmiths, London earlier this year.
