Happy Rutland!
Rutland is the 2nd happiest place to live in the whole of the UK, and the happiest in England, according to a survey released by the Office of National Statistics.
Only Orkney and
Shetland outscore Rutland in the national poll that asked residents
across the United Kingdom to rate how happy they are with life.
- 85% of people living in Rutland are very satisfied with their life
- 87% of people living in Rutland feel that what they do is worthwhile
Roger
Begy, Leader of Rutland County Council said: “Those already living here
have known for a long time that we live in a fantastic area with high
quality education, low crime rates, minimal road congestion and
pollution, as well as some of the best countryside right on our
doorstep”.
“We also have lots more in the
pipeline with faster broadband on the way as part of the joint
council/BT Digital Rutland project and £4 million of transport
improvements that will be extremely welcome in a rural area.”
Roger
Begy added: “Rutland is not only a great place to live, but also a
wonderful tourist destination that attracts people from across the
country each year. I’m sure that this survey will be welcomed by
Discover Rutland and also the tourist businesses across the whole
county”.
Background
This
is the 1st time that a national ‘happiness survey’ has taken place and
it follows an increasing understanding that just using traditional
economic measures do not always reflect overall progress or wellbeing.
Previous
research has always made assumptions about how things like health and
income might influence how people feel about life. This is the first
time that the question has been asked directly to those completing the
survey.
During the last 12 months, the Office
for National Statistics included subjective well-being questions for the
first time in two key household surveys - the Integrated Household
Survey (IHS) and the Opinions and Lifestyle Survey (OPN).
Those
who responded were asked to record between 0-10 (10 being the highest)
how satisfied they are with their life, to what extent they feel the
things they do are worthwhile, how happy did you feel yesterday, and how
anxious did you feel yesterday.
