The Labour Party Candidate
Force area:
Cleveland
Cleveland
Barry Coppinger
Election statement:
In recent months I have met thousands of people across Cleveland – on their
doorsteps, on their streets, at a whole range of community groups and
meetings – and have listened to the concerns about the affect crime and
anti-social behaviour has on people’s day-to-day life.
People want the police to be part of their community; a reliable, visible and
approachable uniformed presence. My top priority will be protecting
Neighbourhood Policing. If elected as Commissioner there will be no
reduction in the number of Neighbourhood Police teams in Cleveland.
Victims and witnesses deserve a better deal from the criminal justice system
and I will work to ensure that their needs are always a priority. The public also
has a right to expect a prompt service when reporting a crime and reports of
anti-social behaviour need a response within 24 hours.
I have a proven track record of working for community safety. I was proud to
be part of the team that introduced Neighbourhood Policing and successfully
fought off plans to merge Cleveland into a regional force.
Our police force faces severe financial challenges. I have already discussed
these in depth with the force management and, with my accountancy background,
I will work to ensure savings can be made through prudent financial control rather
than cuts in front-line services or excessive burdens on Council Tax payers.
I am proud to be the Labour Party candidate but pledge that, if elected, I will
represent the best interests of all residents and respect the operational
independence of the Chief Constable.
