Oakham Town Councillors Visit to Oakham Castle Great Hall Restoration
Above Oakham Town Cllrs Jasmine Hopkins and Michael Elliott
I did think it might have been a good thing to keep these protective
outfits for tonight's meeting.
Today some of our nice Oakham Town Councillors were given a tour
of Oakham Castles grounds and the Great Hall which is currently undergoing
restoration and additional loos being built.
We were joined by a man from Oakham Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group
and nice member of the Rutland Lions.
I can not at the request of Rutland County Council share photographs of the
inside, It is looking very white and clean ugly new lighting which is always
a problem for most historic building is doing a wonderful job highlighting
features previously hidden by shadows.
Rutland County Council are very excited by a find on the wall above the
old courtroom dock. under the paint and plaster it is believed some very
simple and original Norman decoration has been found creating a arch pattern.
Only a small sections have been revealed at this stage. If the testing of material
comes back as Norman this will be the only example of Norman decoration in
the England.
Also a fire place is to be opened in the back room.
