Horseshoe Theatre Scores with Witty "Relative Values"

The Horseshoe Theatre Company celebrated Noel Coward's 125th birthday in style on Friday night! Their performance of "Relative Values," a hilarious comedy of manners, not only tickled the funny bone but also raised funds for Anna's Hope, a local charity supporting children with brain tumours.

"Relative Values," originally staged in 1951, is a witty social satire. It playfully skewers snobbery and the clash between Hollywood glitz and the established British aristocracy. The play reflects a shift in theatrical tastes, as the polished "comedy of manners" style began to give way to grittier realism. As Coward himself quipped, "How can there be comedy of manners when there are no longer manners?"

Directed by Jacqui Melton and co-directed by Anne Stringer, the production boasted a talented cast. Local favorite Andy Lee took the stage as Crestwell, while the experienced Joy Everitt brought her decades of Rutland performances to the role of Lady Marshwood. Bex Lee, a veteran of musicals and theatre, played Miranda Frayle, and Rob Collis delivered a unique interpretation of Nigel, Earl of Marshwood.

The supporting cast was equally impressive. Lizzy Jordon portrayed Mrs. Moxton, the servant turned confidante to the Countess. Christian Obokoh brought wit to Dom Lucas, and Steve Green, a seasoned performer, played the Hon Peter Ingleton. Lu Harris's energetic portrayal of the starstruck maid Alice was a delight, while newcomer Nick Woodley seamlessly fit into the role of the brandy-loving, Pipe smoking, lover of all woman, Admiral Sir John Hayling. Jill Weight rounded out the cast as the impeccably mannered Lady Hayling.

The evening wasn't just about laughter; it was also about giving back. I had the pleasure of assisting Pippy Woodley in selling raffle tickets for Anna's Hope, and we will be back at it tonight!
