Community Outrage as Oakham’s Green Corridor Felled

Oakham residents are reeling from the loss of their beloved tree-lined Brooke Road as the final tree was felled today to accommodate a new housing development.

The removal of the trees has sparked widespread anger and frustration within the community. Rutland County Council has justified the decision by citing the need to widen the road to cope with increased traffic from the new housing estate.

Adding to the community’s distress is the complete closure of the Brooke Road level crossing to both vehicles and pedestrians. This has caused significant disruption, particularly for the elderly and disabled.

I contacted Network Rail about the closure was met with a response placing the blame squarely on the construction company, Burmor Construction . The rail company denied any involvement in the closure decision and refused to provide transport assistance for those affected. Despite attempts to contact Burmor Construction, there has been no response.

The local MP Alicia Kearns has expressed concern over the situation and has initiated discussions with the Burmor Construction about the full closure of the level crossing. She has also endorsed my suggestion for the company to provide a free minibus service for residents.

I question the need for months of disruption caused by the closure. Why does the construction company use temporary traffic lights to control access when heavy plant is entering or leaving the sight. They are not working at nights or weekends.

While the Leader of the Rutland County Council has acknowledged the issue and promised a response from the highways department, I remain sceptical about the council’s commitment to addressing residents concerns.

As the community grapples with the loss of their green corridor and the ongoing disruption caused by the road closure, questions remain about the impact of the new housing development on the local infrastructure and the well-being of residents.
