Leicestershire Police Inspector Reduced in Rank for Racist Remark
A Leicestershire Police Inspector has been found guilty of gross misconduct after making a racist comment to a junior colleague.
At a hearing held on November 1st, 2024, it was determined that the inspector breached standards of professional behaviour, including authority, respect, and courtesy; equality and diversity; and discreditable conduct.
The incident occurred on February 6th, 2024, when the inspector made a racist remark during a shift briefing.
The panel decided that a reduction in rank from Inspector to Sergeant was the appropriate outcome. However, the officer immediately resigned from their position.
The incident caused significant harm to the junior colleague and undermined both public and organisational confidence in the police force.
Assistant Chief Constable Adam Streets stated:
"The comment made to a junior colleague caused significant personal harm and undermined both organisational and public confidence. It is vitally important that officers have the confidence to come forwards and I am extremely grateful to the officer for having the courage to do so.
"Whilst the panel accepts that the inspector did not intend to cause offence and was genuinely remorseful, we cannot and will not tolerate such comments being made."
This incident highlights the importance of maintaining high standards of professionalism and upholding equality and diversity within the police force.

Note
I wonder why, the chair determined, based on applications made and the information provided, that the inspector was to be given anonymity in order to protect the welfare of others. but published the full name and rank of the victim in this case, a officer who has suffered what is described as a serious phycological impact.
