In a significant win for local road safety, Braunston-in-Rutland has officially seen the installation of new 40mph buffer zones at the primary entrances to the village. The move, coordinated between the Parish Council and Rutland County Council Highways, aims to provide a transition for motorists before they reach the residential 30mph limits.
For years, residents have expressed concern over the speed of vehicles transitioning from the national speed limit directly into the heart of the village. The new signage and road markings are designed to "step down" traffic speed, creating a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and local homeowners.
The project involved the installation of high-visibility 40mph signs and accompanying road markings on the main approach roads. These "buffer zones" act as a psychological and legal cue for drivers to begin decelerating well before they encounter the first houses and narrow lanes of Braunston.
Chris Bichard, Chairman of Braunston Parish Council, expressed his satisfaction with the completed works.
"The signs and road markings are prominent and will hopefully make a difference," Bichard stated. "We are pleased Rutland County Council have listened to our request and installed the buffer zones."
The Parish Council hopes that by slowing traffic earlier, the risk of accidents at village gateways will be significantly reduced. The initiative is part of a broader effort across Rutland to address rural speeding and ensure that village boundaries are clearly defined to visiting motorists.
Local authorities are encouraging drivers to remain vigilant and respect the new limits immediately. As the village celebrates this milestone in their safety campaign, the Parish Council will continue to monitor traffic flow to assess the long-term impact of the new markings.
