Catmose Sports Centre, Oakham, Rutland to Close Its Doors on May 31st 2024

Catmose Sports Centre, Oakham, Rutland to Close Its Doors on May 31st 2024

Catmose Sports Closed by the Liberal Democrats
although the promised to improve sports and leisure in
all their election communications.

Catmose Sports Centre, a popular leisure facility in Oakham, will cease operations on Friday, May 31st, 2024. This follows the conclusion of Rutland County Council's contract with Stevenage Leisure Limited (SLL).

The closure signifies the end of public access to the sports centre. However, Catmose College, the owner of the building, is exploring the possibility of offering continued access for community groups and sports clubs beyond the closure date.

Catmose College

In a statement, Catmose College acknowledged the council's decision not to renew the contract due to financial constraints. The college emphasised that it cannot use its public funding, designated for education, to subsidise community sports activities.

The college is currently assessing the feasibility of taking over the facilities. Factors being considered include staffing costs, utilities, insurance, equipment maintenance, and potential income generation.

Catmose College cannot guarantee a future community offer, but they haven't ruled it out either. Current users are advised to make alternative arrangements as public access will cease after May 31st.

An update on the college's decision will be provided once a clear path forward is established. Clubs and groups seeking information on alternative sports facilities can contact  activerutland@rutland.gov.uk

This closure comes despite an optional extension offered to SLL in February 2023, which could have prolonged their contract until March 2025. However, SLL declined to extend beyond May 31st, 2024.

This is the location of the demolished swimming
pool, Stevenage Leisure Ltd received payments
from Rutland County Council even when it was
closed, Rutland Council paid for all the repairs.
It was finally closed by the Conservatives.
The Conservatives promised a new public pool
in their 2019 election leaflets and long before the election.

Watch Sky News, Rutland County Council Highest Council Tax in the Country, Catmose Sports Centre, Parks School, Statue of the late Queen and Interview with Lucy Stephenson Leader of Rutland County Council

Watch Sky News Wednesday evening from 7pm. Learn what residents think about Rutland County Council demanding the Highest Council Tax in the Country, The Catmose Sports Centre closure, Parks School closure and Statue of the late Queen and a  Interview with Lucy Stephenson Leader of Rutland County Council.

Rutland County Council continue to say central government is responsible for our high council tax bills.

Rutland County Council is not giving any contribution towards the cost of the statue of the late Queen.

Oakham Town Council is currently seeking legal advice, to find out if it can spend money from Oakham's precept on the Rutland project.

My personal opinion is the local government act clearly states the precept can only be spent on Oakham things and things that benefit the residents of Oakham and not those in other parts of the county. I don't object to the statue being purchased it should be funded by public subscription only. The proposed location in the flower bed is hideous one. I once made a personally donation toward Leicester's Joe Orton Statue.

Catmose Sports Centre, Stevenage Leisure, Oakham, Rutland, Falling Apart, Photographs, Oakham, Rutland

Catmose Sports Centre, Stevenage Leisure, Oakham, Rutland, Falling Apart,

Rather like the Shoddy Tory group on Rutland County Council, one of their
flagship projects is falling apart.

Every time their is an Election or a press release the Tories harp on about the success of projects
some year old like the by-pass, almost as if they personally dug the foundations.

Catmose New Campus College Community Hub Sports Centre Oakham Rutland Photographs

Catmose Campus College Community Hub Sports Centre Oakham Rutland many signs are appearing on site. I was wondering if these will remain, when the school obtains academy status to escape Councillor Heather Wells and the rest of the team at Rutland County Council. It is interesting when many school teachers are fighting to stay with their local authority Rutland Schools appear to be begging for Academy status.

The campus appears to be open, there is no external gates or fence but as you get closer you can see the very high security fence and  heavy gates at the main entrance, the whole campus is completely covered by the latest CCTV. most likely more secure than Ashwell Prison.

The build seems to use a lot of concrete and has a very industrial feel, this top part reminds me of a council estate awaiting demolition in Leicester. The building is much better than the old one.

Rutland County Council is likely to want some credit for this achievement.

The money came from central government, the builders came from outside Rutland.

The Landscapers and plants came from outside Rutland.

Even the Head Teacher is from Outside Rutland. Nice man, I wish him well in his new school and I hope his application to convert to an Academy is approve very soon.

Behind one of the bike racks is a Oakham Town Councillors home. The Big Little Build paid for a very long fancy wooden fence when he demanded one. Another nearby property got nothing. (sorry I could not resist this Councillor lives on benefits and has a new ADT home security system, how can he afford that?)
