The hum of motors and the clicking of gears filled the air this week as students from across the county gathered for a high-octane Technology Tournament. Organised by the Uppingham and Rutland Rotary Club in partnership with the Ukrainian Rotary Impact Club of Rutland, the event challenged the next generation of engineers to solve a complex real-world problem: the "Quarry Challenge."

The tournament saw a diverse range of local institutions competing, including Oakham, Uppingham, and Stamford schools, alongside Catmose College, Uppingham Community College (UCC), Copthill, and Brooke Priory.

The core objective for all participants was to design and build a motorised model quarrying vehicle. While the theme was consistent, the difficulty spikes were tailored to three distinct age categories, ensuring that both primary and secondary students were pushed to their creative limits.

Foundation Level: Focused on basic chassis construction and reliable motor integration.

Intermediate Level: Required more sophisticated gearing and the ability to navigate uneven "quarry" terrain.

Advanced Level: Challenged senior students with complex weight-bearing requirements and precision maneuvering.

The event was notable not only for the STEM skills on display but for the unique collaboration behind the scenes. The involvement of the Ukrainian Rotary Impact Club of Rutland highlighted the community's inclusive spirit, bringing together local and displaced expertise to support the educational development of Rutland’s youth.

"It is fantastic to see so many schools from different sectors independent and state working side-by-side," said one of the event organisers. "The level of ingenuity shown in the quarrying vehicle designs proves that the future of engineering in our region is in very capable hands."

As the dust settled on the "quarry," the Rotary clubs confirmed their commitment to making this a staple of the local school calendar, fostering a love for technology that extends far beyond the classroom.
