Oakham in Bloom 2023 Joyce Lucas BEM and Craigs Legacy Oakham in Bloom needs a lot of volunteers to sort this mess out, can you help?
If you want to make Oakham look good again please help Oakham in Bloom this year.
The first to volunteering is to contact Oakham in Bloom, via the form or email the chairman.
sometimes the work of Oakham in Bloom
volunteers is spoilt by people like the man
who sits on the bench outside the library almost
every day and eats at least two boxes of
Mr Kipling cakes and disposes the litter in
the flower beds.
As Joyce and Craig scared of volunteers the flower beds the
volunteers tended have been filled in.
There has been at least two wild flower gardens in the
castle grounds organised by Joyce Lucas, often these are
planted by children around the time the judges
from East Midland in Bloom were due in town.
The wild flower garden, has not seen a flower for
years all that remains is the sign shown above.
Joyce was also given £250 from Oakham Town Council to spend on plants
in the corner of Princess Avenue and there is nothing there now.
The towns roundabouts have look dreadful for years.
Oakham in Bloom have asked on Twitter should we get rid of these planters?
This is due to the use of peat.
I say yes they are very ugly and used for litter bins
and ashtrays. They are very large ugly containers
that require large plants.
The Judges told Oakham in Bloom some years ago they
did not like them. Joyce Lucas decided they would stay
and change the judges route the following year.
Just one problem there are two outside the museum
the location where the committee would meet the judges
for afternoon tea. So men in shed kindly tried to hide
them from the judges and made a blue wooden picket fence to
surround each container. The judges were not fooled.
The wooden fences were removed once
Oakham in Bloom gave up entering the competitions.
Joyce Lucas BEM Oakham Castle Trees Greatest Legacy Oakham Rutland
Years on we all suffer one of the worst decisions made by Oakham Town Council
led by then Cllr Joyce Lucas.
Joyce lied to me as tree warden, she said she would never recommend the felling of a
tree. In the case of the castle wall project she recommend the destruction of dozens of
fine healthy trees that added to the attractive nature of Cutts Close Park.
At the time I was a Oakham Town Councillor and was the only member
who voted against this dreadful destruction.
I wonder if Joyce knew she was only being recommended for a BEM she would
have gone along with Rutland County Councils destructive plans to expose the
crumbling stone wall?
Rutland County Council has spent over £2 million pounds of lottery money
creating the mess below, one of Joyce Lucas's greatest legacies.
All the tree stumps are still
plugged with poison to kill them off.
Thank goodness Joyce Lucas is no longer the
tree warden and retired from Oakham in Bloom, once again.
